but of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you, and these memories lose their meaning when i think of love as something new.

"You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

We finally made it to Beijing yesterday after a long, miserable flight. I don’t know about the others, but as cool as China is (and it’s really kind of awesome so far), I’m not sure I’ll ever come back - if only because that flight was so unbelievably long. At one point, I was ready to jump off the plane - and we still had 7 hours left until Tokyo.

Our flight landed a little before midnight Tuesday local time, and we took a long, rather dangerous, and very dark hour-long drive to the hotel with a driver who spoke no English. We got to the hotel around one a.m., where we were confronted with a confused hotel staff who also only spoke Mandarin. Needless to say, at this point I was cursing myself for giving up Chinese. The little I remember - "Wo xi huan zu qiu" - not really helpful.*

Sunshine and splendor greeted us this morning. The hotel complex we’re staying in, the Grand Epoch City, is enormous, but sneaking in in the dead of the night, we missed most of it. This morning, we couldn’t get away from its grandeur. It’s pretty overwhelming, to be honest - built as a model of old Beijing, there are temples, fountains, hutongs, ponds, and multiple hotels and conference halls scattered on a plot over 200 hectares in size, all fenced in by an enormous wall. Rumor has it that a Communist Party convention stayed here last week…so, you know, we’re kind of a big deal.

My favorite thing about the GEC (as we have so affectionately nicknamed it) is the fountain just in front of our hotel. Composed of life-size bronze models of a wolf pack barking at a majestic deer (the wolves shoot water out of their mouths), it is hauntingly beautiful, disturbing, and hilarious all at once.

*In case you’re wondering, “Wo xi huan zu qiu” means “I like soccer.” What can I say, I was in 4th grade…

Argentina

Last winter, I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a little over a month. While I was there, I explored the city, the rest of Argentina, and parts of Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay — and blogged the whole time I was there. My trip to Argentina was life-changing, and not in the way that most kids talk about their study abroad experiences. After returning to the States, I decided to transfer universities. I just finished my first year at Boston University, and although I sometimes regret leaving the University of Delaware, I am so happy to be living in a city.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be re-blogging some of my posts from my trip to Argentina last year, as well as some new pictures that I haven’t put up.

Some people—

Some people can get a thrill
knitting sweaters and sitting still.
That’s okay for some people
who don’t know they’re alive.

Some people can thrive and bloom
living life in the living room.
That’s perfect for some people
of one hundred and five.

But I at least gotta try—
when I think of all the sights that I gotta see
and all the places I gotta play,
all the things that I gotta be at.

Some People,” from Gypsy
